Lollypop Creek Primary school is one of four new primary schools to open in Melbourne’s west this week.
Principal Joel Riddle and his staff welcomed about 130 students on day one at the Werribee school, with more expected to enrol during the next few weeks.
Located in the heart of Melbourne’s biggest growth corridor, the school’s can accommodate more than 500 students.
Mr Riddle said the opportunity to build a school and its culture was something that has excited the community.
“It’s been really exciting and fulfilling. We’re finally seeing nine months of planning come into fruition, it’s a great feeling seeing the students in the classroom,” he said.
“It was a unique experience building a school from scratch. It’s an amazing opportunity to establish a culture from the ground up, appoint staff and come somewhere where there’s no preconceived ideas or issues.”
Mr Riddle said Lollypop Creek would be able to cater for the influx of families set to move in to nearby estates.
“You only need to look around you to see schools in the Wyndham area are quite populated,” he said.
“Just looking at our own area … it’s going to be quite populated in the years to come and it’s amazing that there’s a primary school right in the middle to provide education to the primary aged students.”
