The Mortlake Cup has been cancelled, with organisers forced to cancel the popular event due to the wet weather.
Racing Victoria released a statement on Tuesday, announcing the cup won’t go ahead on Saturday as planned, with Mt. Wycheproof Cup Day also cancelled.
“The bet365 Mortlake Cup and Elders Mt. Wycheproof Cup Day – Derby Day in the Country on Saturday 29 October have been abandoned, owing to the impacts of ongoing wet weather,” Nikkita Ross said in the statement.
“The significant rainfall across Victoria has impacted the Mortlake and Mt. Wycheproof tracks, as well as affecting racecourse facilities and surrounds, and accessibility to the respective regions.”
The Mortlake track has received about 140mm of rain in the past three weeks and 43mm since Friday, while the Mt. Wycheproof track has received about 165mm since the start of October and 60mm in the last seven days.
The event on Saturday would have been the first Mortlake Cup since 2019 without any Covid restrictions, only to be cancelled as current rainfall and floods continue to affect Victoria.
Racing Victoria said that full refunds will be provided to people who have purchased tickets and packages on the day.
