A Mildura man has been accused of a sickening attack that has permanently damaged a woman’s eyesight.

A court heard on March 8, Zachery Lawson allegedly kicked a woman in the head so hard it caused her retina to become detached.

The 31-year-old fronted Mildura Magistrates Court on Thursday on several charges, including making threats to kill and a prohibited person possessing a firearm.

The prosecution told the court Mr Lawson denied kicking the woman in a police interview but accepted he was angry.

“I didn’t kick her, I slapped her,” Mr Lawson is alleged to have said in the interview.

He also allegedly added he thought the force was about a seven out of ten.

The prosecutor said, in his police interview, Mr Lawson said tried to help the woman when he saw her bleeding.

The woman suffered nasal fracture, swelling to her eyes, and macular haemorrhage.

The court was told her central vision would be permanently impaired.

When Mr Lawson was arrested, he was allegedly found with a homemade firearm, as well as a used .22 cartridge.

However, the defence told the court the firearm was not operational.

Mr Lawson remains in custody awaiting his next court appearance, slated to be on July 31.
