A Mildura family is counting their lucky stars after their two-year-old son was hit by a car.
Dad Gursharanjit Singh stepped out of his Ontario Ave house to pick up a delivery at 1.25pm Tuesday, with his two sons playing in the front room of the family home.
Unbeknown to him, his youngest son Ajit had followed him out of the house and chased after him across the street.
“I just went across the road — it all happened so quickly,” Mr Singh said.
Mr Singh recounted the terrifying moment he realised his son was lying prone on the road, his leg trapped underneath a car.
“It was so fast. When it happened, I ran and his foot was underneath the tyre (of the car). I pushed on the car’s hood to get it to move backwards,” Mr Singh said.
He immediately scooped up his son, rushed him into the family car, and drove straight to Mildura Base Public Hospital.
Despite the frightening ordeal, Mr Singh said Ajit was lucky to escape with just bumps and bruises.
“There’s a little bend in his leg, but the doctor said there were no fractures or breaks,” Mr Singh said with relief.
Although Mr Singh has not been in touch with the driver who struck his son, he holds no ill will towards her, saying she couldn’t have foreseen what was going to happen.
“She was in shock. She can’t have seen what was going to happen, especially because he is so little,” Mr Singh said.
The driver wasn’t the only one in shock; Ajit’s older brother, Anhad, also witnessed the near-miss, leaving him visibly shaken.
“He was playing with him, so he saw it happen. He was a bit in shock because of the blood,” Mr Singh said.
Ajit was discharged from hospital on Wednesday afternoon with the family left grateful beyond words the toddler had come home safe when things could have been so much worse.
“He’s fine. We are so lucky,” Mr Singh said.
As the family reflected on the incident, they were acutely aware of how close they came to a tragedy.
“You never think something like this will happen to you, it all unfolded so quickly,” Mr Singh said.
