A popular Italian chef who has devoted his life to northwest Victoria will receive one of the nation’s highest honours.

Governor-general announces King's Birthday honours list

Renowned chef, councillor, and local advocate Stefano De Pieri will be bestowed the honour of becoming a member of the Order of Australia this King’s Birthday long weekend.

Hailing from Venice, Italy, Mr De Pieri arrived in Australia nearly four decades ago with a mission to share the authentic flavours and culinary delights of his hometown.

Since then, Mr De Pieri has become an invaluable asset to the Mildura community and the broader Australian food and wine scene.

After completing a degree in politics and Italian studies, he made Mildura his home in 1991.

It was here that he opened his renowned restaurant, Stefano’s, nestled beneath the historic Grand Hotel in the heart of the town.

Mr De Pieri’s impact extended far beyond his restaurant.

He authored a book which lead to an ABC TV show.

“My little restaurant, serving simple Italian food and good wines somehow got the attention of the ABC, which was very constructive, it highlighted the beauty of our region and what was possible here for food and wine,” he said.

Passionate about promoting diversity in the wine industry, Mr De Pieri lent his support to the Australian Alternative Varieties Wine Show, which has transformed Australians’ wine preferences over the past two decades.

“The show has changed the way people drink in Australia, broadening their palates beyond chardonnay and rose,” he said.

Prior to his tenure as a councillor, Mr De Pieri played a vital role in establishing Arts Mildura and collaborating with La Trobe University.

He also served on the Mildura tourism board, tirelessly working to promote the town as a vibrant and welcoming destination.

“I don’t like bragging about myself I just go about, about my job doing the best I can trying to make this place the best it can be” he said.

“There are so many people here on the same wavelength working tirelessly to make Mildura a fantastic place to live and a great destination for others.

“Mildura is a fantastic place to live because it is full of possibilities.”

Mr De Pieri said he was “chuffed” to become a member of the Order of Australia.

“I was quite happy to get a consideration medal, and now to get this award on the King’s Birthday is quite an honour,” he said.

“I don’t know who nominated me but very grateful to them, I’m very chuffed that someone saw fit to give me this award.”
