A Mildura man kicked a woman in the face, ransacked cars, fled from police and swiped high-end loot during a crime spree in Geelong.
Jamal Thorpe, 27, fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court to plead guilty to a raft of charges including recklessly causing injury, theft of a motor vehicle and possession of a controlled weapon.
The court heard that in January 2024, an argument escalated into a brutal assault in which a woman was hospitalised after being kicked in the face.
In September 2024, Thorpe was caught inside a blue Nissan sedan that had number plates belonging to a different car. When police attempted to search Thorpe, he took off, before falling during a foot chase with officers and being arrested.
The court heard Thorpe resisted the arresting officers and when he was finally put in handcuffs, police discovered he was in possession of a large kitchen knife.
In December of the same year, Thorpe broke into a residential garage and stole bank cards and keys from two vehicles.
He would later use the stolen keys to take the Holden parked at the address and drive it to a nearby BP, where he made more than $200 worth of purchases using a stolen bank card from the same address.
The victim of the incident submitted a victim impact statement to the court saying he had become depressed, anxious and hopeless since the incident.
“I am finding it very hard to do things because of the crime. I am feeling overwhelmed and unmotivated,” the statement read.
The court was also told of several shop thefts, including one at the Sunglass Hut in Geelong, where he stole a pair of Prada sunnies worth more than $450 and others where he stole booze from liquor stores.
When asked by police about the alcohol thefts, he simply told police “I needed a drink.”
Thorpe’s lawyer Sasha Leon Molina said her client was dealing with a death in the family during the bulk of his offending and that he was dealing with the loss by drinking alcohol.
Magistrate Michael Coghlan handed down a three months and 30-day term of imprisonment.
“You have engaged in multiple offences, including a serious assault on a female victim … If not for your plea of guilty, I would have sentenced you to a total of six months,” Mr Coghlan said.
