Mildura police are unfazed about a potential rise in crime despite recent data placing the region among the top local government areas for criminal activities.

Recent data from the Crime Statistics Agency shows Mildura had an 18.1 per cent increase in crime incidents compared to last year.

The region had over 5000 crimes per 100,000 people by September 30, 2022 compared to 4399 the previous year.

Family violence order breaches and criminal damage were the main offences, the CSA data shows.

The new figures place Mildura alongside Melbourne, Port Phillip, Yarra, Latrobe and Greater Shepparton in the top five areas for highest rates of crime.

Victoria Police did note the total offences recorded were below Covid levels, when 7567 offences recorded.

“While we always prefer to see a reduction in crime, we are pleased to see overall offending in Mildura remains below pre-pandemic levels,” Mildura’s Local Area Commander Inspector Michelle Young said.

“It is also encouraging the community has confidence in reporting crime to police, particularly in the areas of family violence and assaults.”

Inspector Young urged residents to be vigilant over the New Year period with police set to be out in force.

“Police will continue to maintain a highly visible presence in the community during the holiday season and beyond,” she said.

“The community can be assured local police will be out in numbers on the roads and on foot to ensure public safety and prevent criminal activity.

“An important factor in preventing crime is for all of us to be proactive in ensuring our homes, vehicles as well as bicycles and scooters are secure.”
