Backyard swimming pools in some parts of north and northeastern Victorian are awash with frogs as flood waters dry up, leading to fears deadly snakes may follow.
Social media is awash with pictures of pools housing frogs in their droves after a “perfect storm” of the recent floods across Victoria leading into frog breeding season.
And while some pool owners love them - particularly as they eat mozzies - others worry they will attract deadly snakes to their properties.
The frog conundrum has reached the point where almost every second customer has called Poolside Yarrawonga to ask about how to deal with them.
“It’s one of those perfect storms for the breeding season for the frogs,” manager Dale Ferguson said.
“I’ve seen the floodwaters in New South Wales and (water) off the road and they’re just teeming with tadpoles.”
“It will peter out — it’s just a matter of being patient and understanding there’s not much you can do about it.
“It‘s just nature at its best.”
A mixture of pool maintenance and regular cleaning should reduce the problem, Mr Ferguson said.
Mr Ferguson said most pools would be safe to swim in after dead frogs were removed and the pool was treated.
“If you’ve got dead frogs in your pool, which I’ve seen in pools where the pump basket and skimmer basket have been choked with them, that’s unhealthy — it smells,” he said.
“They’ll need to put an oxidiser through the water to help clean it out, but if they’re vigilant they can still swim in the pool, it’s just a bit of labour to get them out.”
