An Ouyen horse trainer is accused of launching a violent, alcohol-fuelled assault on a woman, allegedly pummelling her for more than an hour while a child looked on.

David Nunn fronted Mildura Magistrates’ Court seeking bail after police alleged he brutally assaulted the woman on May 11.

Mr Nunn has trained horses primarily on country tracks around Sunraysia, notching up 15 wins and more than $100,000 in prize money during his racing career.

The court heard Mr Nunn became aggressive after a night of drinking, allegedly shaping up to the woman before punching her in the face, slamming her head into the floor, and stomping on her repeatedly.

Police said the attack escalated when Mr Nunn allegedly grabbed a vacuum cleaner and beat the woman with it, before filling a syringe with an unknown substance and threatening to inject her.

An eight-year-old child was allegedly present during part of the incident.

In a disturbing piece of evidence, police told the court audio of the incident was captured on CCTV.

The woman could allegedly be heard screaming for help and at one point yelled, “I can’t breathe”.

It was alleged Mr Nunn replied, “Good, I hope you die”.

The woman eventually managed to escape after what police said was an hour and 20 minutes of sustained violence.

Police said the woman was hospitalised with multiple facial fractures and contusions, and was expected to be flown to Melbourne to see an eye and ear specialist due to a possible optic nerve injury.

Mr Nunn was arrested shortly after but allegedly resisted police and attempted to flee the scene.

During his recorded interview, Mr Nunn allegedly told police the argument had “Got slightly physical” and that he was only pushing the woman away to defend himself.

The court heard the woman later told police she believed she would have been killed had a child in the house not intervened.

Magistrate Patrick Southey said the police case appeared strong and “terribly serious”.

“Photos of the complainant are truly horrific … there appears to be quite a bit of supporting evidence,” he said.

“Sorry Mr Nunn, as you might have inferred, I am not going to grant you bail.”

Mr Nunn was remanded in custody and is set to return to court on August 13 for a committal hearing.
