A Mildura scumbag robbed a 10-year-old boy waiting to kick the footy with his mate at a local racetrack, a court has heard.

Narzouli Togo fronted Mildura Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including theft, and recklessly causing injury.

In December last year, the victim was changing into his footy boots, waiting to meet a friend at the Mildura harness racing track when Togo, himself a father of three, rode up on a pushbike and grabbed the boy’s backpack.

CCTV footage from the racetrack captured Togo riding away with the stolen bag.

The child gave a victim impact statement where he described the incident.

“I was tying up my laces when he came around and stole my bag,” the victim impact statement said.

‘It frustrates me to talk about. It makes me sad to know that not all adults are good people.”

His mum also provided a victim impact statement where she expressed fear and shame for letting her son ride his bike to meet his friend on his own.

On another occasion Togo and a co-accused chased a man down and stole his bag after beating him with a piece of wood after purchasing cannabis.

When he was arrested on that matter he simply told police his motivating factor was “money.”

Togo’s lawyer Hugh Middleton said drugs were a factor in his offending as well as his disadvantaged background.

Magistrate Patrick Southey said Togo will receive a prison sentence but wanted him assessed for a community corrections order as well.

Police prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Kristen Simm made it clear that a prison sentence was the only sentence suitable for Togo’s offending.

“The victim was just 10 years old. All he wanted to do on this day was meet up with his friend to kick the footy,” Ms Simm said

“Drugs are not an excuse for this offending … intergenerational trauma is not an excuse for this offending … this offending will have a profound and lasting impact on the victim and his family.”

Magistrate Patrick Southey agreed that the only sentence appropriate was a prison term.

The offending … was just despicable, appalling behaviour. To treat a child in that manner is just so heartless. You should be ashamed of yourself,” Mr Southey said.

Togo was handed a total effective sentence of three months behind bars. He was also given an 18-month community corrections order which will begin when he is released from jail.
