Police will prepare a report for the coroner after a four-year-old boy drowned on Sunday in Mildura.

Officers were called to a holiday park in Flora Ave about 5.30pm after the boy was found unresponsive in a pool.

The death was not being treated as suspicious.

Police on Tuesday confirmed the boy was from nearby Buronga, on the New South Wales side of the border with Mildura.

It continues a horror year for drownings in the Sunraysia and Mallee regions.

The Murray River has claimed five lives in the stretch between Swan Hill and Merbein this year.

The body of a 21-year-old Sri Lankan man was found in September after he went under water and failed to resurface.

Other river deaths included a 21-year-old who fell off a boat near Swan Hill, a fisherman near Euston, a 22-year-old water skier at Merbein Common and a visitor from New York at Mildura.

The latest death came on the same day Police and Emergency Services Minister Lisa Neville flagged that Victoria was on track for its deadliest year on record for drownings.

At least 27 people had drowned in Victorian waterways since July this year, including five children ranging from infants to four years old.
