In light of these updates, Mildura Rural City Council hosted a community flood preparedness meeting where several speakers talked about what the council, SES, and Victoria Police were doing to prepare for the floods.

The meeting was attended by Mildura council chief executive Martin How, SES commander Mark Cattell, and Murray Catchment Authority operations and community general manager James Kellerman.

Mr Cattell advised people to stay informed about how the situation would evolve in the coming weeks.

“We are updating the warning so make sure you look at VicEmergency or the SES site … What we are saying at the moment is maintain being informed about what’s going on,” he said.

“Once we jack up [the warnings] a little bit higher to Watch and Act, it’s no different to a fire. We want you to do exactly the same thing just watch your circumstances and act on whatever comes your way.”

Mildura council development general manager Daryl Morgan reminded people to pay attention to the signposts put out by the council.

“I just want to remind people that if you do see a sign please don’t drive past it,” he said.

“You don’t know what’s over the crest of that hill, if there is water right up to the road, the road just disappears and obviously that puts people at risk.”
