Students studying at La Trobe University are more likely to find full-time employment after graduation that students from Melbourne’s “sandstone” universities.
According to data from the Federal Department of Education’s Graduate Outcomes Survey La Trobe University’s full-time employment rate for graduates in 64.5 per cent, while Victoria University’s employment rate for graduates is 57.8 per cent, and University of Melbourne’s is just 57 per cent.
With campuses in Albury-Wodonga, Shepparton, Mildura, and Bendigo as well as Melbourne and Sydney, a La Trobe University spokeswoman said graduates from La Trobe’s regional campuses had a higher employment rate than those studying in metropolitan areas.
“La Trobe has a strong focus on supporting student employability and strives to provide qualifications and learning experiences for our students in the regions that serve the needs of our communities, employers and regional industries,” a La Trobe University spokeswoman said.
“La Trobe’s regional graduates in engineering, nursing, social work and midwifery have close to 100 per cent employment rate after graduation.
“Highlighting the value of studying a La Trobe degree, data shows that regional graduate employment rates (full time and part time) in 2019 were 81.8 per cent in Albury-Wodonga.”
La Trobe graduates can also expect to earn a higher median salary than graduates from Melbourne’s two major universities.
La Trobe graduates can expect to earn a median full-time salary of $62,000 per year, with Victoria University graduates earning a median full-time salary of $60,100, and University of Melbourne graduates earning $59,500.
Those studying pharmacy had the highest change for employment in 2020, with 94.4 per cent of graduates finding full-time work.
La Trobe’s Bendigo campus offers a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree.
The fields of study with the next highest percentages of graduate employment were medicine (93.9 per cent), rehabilitation (87.3 per cent), engineering (83.4 per cent), and veterinary science (81.1 per cent).
University course offerings may affect the earning potential of graduates.
La Trobe’s Albury-Wodonga campus offers a Bachelor of Biomedical science degree and a Bachelor of Veterinary and Animal Biosciences degree.
Students who choose to study at one of La Trobe’s regional campuses qualify for their regional rewards program, which entitles them to a guaranteed work experience placement in the second or third year of their degree with the Work Integrated Learning program.
