Hovell Tree Park’s popular community wood-fired ovens are back open for business after being closed for a year for redevelopment.
The $750,000 redevelopment is part of nine projects funded by the NSW Government in conjunction with Albury City Council to upgrade the Murray River precinct.
The new ovens are complemented by shelters, seating, mains power, a drinking fountain and a small garden.
A grill has also been added to provide better cooking opportunities for the community.
St Patrick’s primary school’s Year 6 students were the first to try out the upgraded ovens with some wood-fired pizzas.
The council’s oven co-ordinator Michael Laubli was in charge of cooking the pizzas, and said the ovens were heated to 600 degrees.
“You heat it up overnight and it lasts for days,” Mr Laubli said.
“It means you can cook a lot of food for a long time.”
State MP for Albury Justin Clancy said it was fantastic to have the facilities reopened.
“It’s great to have the young people down here, because it’s for them, the future,” Mr Clancy said.
“These precincts are a place for family and friends to gather and in that sense it’s a really important element for our community.
“The initial oven was here for about 15 years and the fact that they had to increase capacity just shows how welcome they’ve been.
“The community has been really hooked in and using it, so it’s great it’s been expanded, and I know it will get lots of use going forward.”
St Patrick’s Year 6 students Ruby Moona and Charlie Plunkett thanked the council for allowing them to be the first to try the new ovens.
“We know this project has been one year in the making, and we’re extremely grateful for the opportunity as being the only school invited,” Miss Moona said.
“Thank you to Michael and Pete for showing us how to use the ovens and helping us make the pizzas.
“We are unequivocally certain that the pizza ovens will be beneficial to the community.”
The ovens will be open for the first community bake on November 29, with more bakes scheduled for December 13 and January 10.
From January 10 the ovens will be fired up every second Sunday, open from 3pm-8pm from October to March, and 11am-4pm for the rest of the year.
Anything you can bake in the oven at home can be baked in a wood-fired oven, including pizzas, bread, cakes and scones, and even a roast dinner.
