A Mildura methhead led police on a high speed chase before dumping his car and dashing to a mate’s place, demanding he be taken to the airport.

Jordan Stainer was jailed for seven months in the Mildura Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to a string of driving offences including reckless driving endangering emergency service workers, driving without a licence, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, driving under the influence.

Police prosecutor Michael Cats told the court Jordan Stainer led police on a car chase through Mildura in November last year, after they tried to pull him over for driving with an unregistered vehicle.

Jordan stainer has pleaded guilty to a number of charges at Mildura Magistrates’ Court.

“At approximately 3.56pm police observed a maroon Nissan Pulsar, (and) checks conducted via VicRoads indicated the vehicle registration had expired in December 2017,” he said.

“Police followed the vehicle onto Tait Ave and activated the police vehicle’s red and blue flashing lights in preparation to intercept.”

The court heard Stainer then mounted a kerb and drove through the front yard of several properties, before then turned down Cavallo Drive toward a police checkpoint, forcing officers to move to avoid getting hit.

Stainer then sped through the school zone outside Trinity Lutheran College, before

dumping the vehicle in Batey Crescent.

Stainer then doubled back on foot through Fifteenth St before stopping at the house of one of his friends and asking for a lift to the airport, before fleeing when police arrived.

Stainer was then later picked up sleeping in an abandoned car in St Kilda and bailed and remanded to appear in Mildura Magistrates Court.

On March 8 this year after Stainer had been bailed for the previous offences, he attempted to run over a Mildura police detective with a motorcycle causing injuries to both himself and the officer.

After this incident Stainer’s blood was tested at the Mildura Base Hospital, revealing the presence of methylamphetamine

Prosecutor Cats told the court that Stainer hadn’t had an easy upbringing, regularly sleeping rough and using drugs.

“(Stainer) is transient in his living arrangements, regularly sleeping in abandoned houses and cars, and commuting between Melbourne and Mildura,” he said.

“Stainer is unemployed and is a heavy drug user.”

Stainer‘s lawyer Huge Middleton said it was his client’s first time in jail, which had been a “real wake-up call”.

“He’s found the rebuild program which is a six-week program where you learn plumbing and plastering to be quite instructive,” he said.

Magistrates Patrick Southey said in his sentencing the adult jail may be more constructive for Stainer but didn’t want to put a young man in jail for a long time, however a prison sentence was required.

“In adult jail at least there might at least be some old inmate that says ‘look sunshine you’ve got to turn your life around’,” he said.

“Ultimately these charges require a term of imprisonment, it was outrageous driving.”

Stainer will spend an extra three months in jail for these offences having already spent 126 days in jail for other charges.
