A woman is accused of stealing 10 dogs from the Mildura pound only five days after she surrendered them, a court has heard.
Jennifer Sally Hill, 54, faced a string of charges relating to the theft of 10 dogs and two horses from the local pound.
She is contesting the charges.
The court heard she was not an “animal activist” but an “animal lover”.
The animals had previously belonged to Hill but in July last year she surrendered 10 kelpie-cross dogs before she allegedly stole them.
She is accused of unscrewing an airconditioning unit on the building and climbing in through the roof where she opened the cages and stole the dogs.
Hill was identified through CCTV footage however the footage was lost due to a “hard drive failure”.
It is then alleged Hill returned to the shelter in August and stole two horses that had previously been seized from her.
While she was staying at a property in Merbein late last year, a witness allegedly saw her arrive on a tractor, towing a horse float.
At the time she also allegedly had in her possession the same dogs and horses stolen from the shelter.
Hill’s lawyer said she disputed it was her in the footage.
The matter will be heard at a contested hearing next month.
