Sunraysia residents could soon be learning the flying trapeze, aerial acts, acrobatics, tumbling and juggling, with a circus school planning to open in coming months.
Listo Trapeze Company is aiming to move in to an Irymple site by Christmas and have classes ready for Term 1 next year.
An outdoor flying trapeze will be set up next to an indoor facility with a 5.5m high roof, allowing for a wide range of circus teaching.
Instructor Jack Peterson had been scouring all of Victoria to find a suitable place to establish the school.
Mildura worked because of its affordability and weather conditions that will allow the trapeze to run year-round.
Mr Peterson said the community vibe also appealed.
“I really like the town,” he said.
“I spent time there as a kid and have good memories of it and there was a place big enough where we could do everything we wanted to.
“Rather than being restricted to some elements of circus, we can do everything.”
Listo has previously operated on the Mornington Peninsula and performed at Adelaide Fringe earlier this year, before COVID-19 brought activities to a halt.
The school aimed to cater for all ages and abilities.
Mr Peterson said the youngest person he’d caught was four years old and the oldest was 78.
He has performed around the world and has more than 15 years of teaching experience.
“I’ve always had a dream of setting up a circus school,” he said.
“I struggled in school and it’s about finding kids like me who can’t focus real well and finding something that works for them.”
The plan was for classes to run for adults, teens and children, starting with introductory classes in the first term.
Advanced classes will then be added.
There will be four in the teaching team, including Mr Peterson, a Mildura-based instructor and two relocating from Melbourne and Adelaide.
The school has secured a site in an industrial area south of Henshilwood Reserve.
