A Mildura drug fiend with a history of offending dating back more than a quarter of a century has been sentenced for his latest spate of offences.

Hong Van Nguyen, 45, was jailed after being found with nearly a kilogram of cannabis, and even more being found at his home address.

Nguyen was also found with more than 7g of heroin in 19 separate packages, a gram of methylamphetamine and 25 canisters of suboxone — a drug used to help addicts cope with withdrawal and cravings from opioids.

The offences took place between October 2023 and February 2024.

Nguyen’s lawyer successfully argued that the 19 separate packages of heroin were so Nguyen could control his intake of the drug, and not for trafficking.

On top of his drug charges, Nguyen also had a litany of traffic offences related to driving while disqualified.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan drew attention to Nguyen’s 10-plus court appearances on drug related charges dating back to 1998 before he handed down his sentence.

Nguyen pleaded guilty to all charges and was sentenced to four months total in prison, as well as fines to the tune of $1000. Nguyen has spent 41 days behind bars already.
