A Mildura man allegedly broke into a shed on the grounds of the local church presbytery, a court has heard.
Hayden Culph, 43, fronted Mildura Magistrates Court seeking bail on multiple charges of failing to answer bail and burglary.
The court heard on December 21, Mr Culph was allegedly busted by police ransacking a shed on the grounds of the Sacred Heart presbytery.
Mr Culph allegedly jumped the fence and found a shed where it is alleged he stole numerous items including camp stretchers, gazebo, camping chair, backpack, electric heaters, men’s clothes and a hose reel.
Police claimed they witnessed Mr Culph in nearby Nash Lane and when he was arrested they allegedly found the stolen items and the drug Xanax in his possession.
When police attempted to interview him, Mr Culph allegedly told them he had never been to the presbytery.
Mr Culph was also accused of smashing the front window of the Mildura Noodle and Pasta Bar and stealing drinks from the fridge, the court heard
Evidence was given by Emily Faulkner about Mr Culph’s numerous failures to attend court in accordance with his bail conditions.
“Warrant after warrant and he just doesn’t show up to court,” Ms Faulkner said.
Magistrate Patrick Southey conceded that a lot of Mr Culph’s alleged offending was shoplifting.
“But it goes further than that with burglary allegations and smashing shop windows. And he just won’t turn up to court,” Mr Southey said.
“The Risk of him failing to appear and committing more offences is unacceptable,” he said as he denied bail.
Mr Culph is next scheduled to appear at Mildura Magistrates’ Court on January 30.
