A Mildura woman says a group allegedly threatened to shoot her if she didn’t let them take off with her grandfather’s treasured war medals.
Haley Sheriff allegedly caught three people at her home in northwest Victoria in late December when she arrived home and blocked their vehicle in the driveway.
When they tried to escape Mrs Sheriff said they allegedly said they would shoot her if she didn’t move it.
“I felt like I had two options at that point, either get shot or get run over as they attempted to drive out,” she said.
Among the alleged stolen goods were her grandfather, Donald Hallet Clever Gisborne’s, war medals including a long service medal for unblemished service.
Mrs Sheriff is begging for the medals to be returned; and is offering a $500 reward if they are.
“They aren’t of a high financial value but they are of an incredibly high sentimental value,” she said.
Mrs Sheriff’s grandfather served in the New Zealand Division of the Royal Navy from 1923 until he retired at the end of the war in 1945 when he was 39.
Mrs Sheriff and her mother are only children and she says the medals are the only thing they have connecting them to their family’s history.
“My grandfather, he held these medals, he wore them,” Mrs Sheriff said through tears.
“I wear them every Anzac Day and have since I was young.
“The material things can be replaced, that’s what insurance is for but these things can’t.
“Someone knows something, we are holding onto a small glimmer of hope that someone will have just an ounce of compassion and return them.”
Detectives have charged three people over the alleged burglary and series of offending in Koorlong last year.
