A former Mildura teacher has pleaded guilty to acts of gross indecency involving children in the 1980s, including filming a person under his care, supervision or authority naked.

But the local historian plans to fight more recent charges relating to grooming and child abuse material.

Mildura man Glenn Miller, 77, on Tuesday appeared from custody by video link at Mildura Magistrates’ Court for a committal mention.

Miller pleaded guilty to five charges of committing an act of gross indecency either with, or in the presence of persons under 16 who were in his care, supervision or authority.

The offending took place in Mildura between 1983 and 1988.

In one charge Miller pleaded guilty to, a child was filmed naked.

In another involving a child, Miller produced a film where both parties were naked save for a shoe on their genitalia.

Two charges related to Miller displaying pornography to a child, while another related to deliberately remaining naked in the presence of a child.

He also pleaded guilty to a further four charges of contravening an order.

Miller told the court he wanted to add a “qualification” to his guilty pleas.

His lawyer said Miller was intending to say there were “mitigating reasons or explanations for the offending he’s pleading guilty to”.

Miller pleaded not guilty to two charges of grooming, covering a period from 2017 to February 2020.

He also pleaded not guilty to five charges relating to possessing, distributing or producing child abuse material, with dates in January and February last year.

Miller, a local historian, was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 2000 and was in 2004 appointed a Freeman of the City, Mildura’s highest civic honour.

The matter will next be heard at a Melbourne County Court directions hearing on April 20.
