Community input will be sought to decide a name for Mildura’s new $44 million sports hub.
The project, including a six-court stadium and an oval capable of hosting AFL pre-season games, is being built under the Mildura South Regional Sporting Precinct working title.
But Mildura Rural City Council has other plans for a more permanent name.
The council is also considering selling the naming rights to items within the precinct.
A council spokesman said the process would start with efforts to determine a name for the entire precinct.
“An engagement process will be conducted in the near future to seek names from the community for the entire (precinct) MSRSP,” the spokesman said.
“A panel will be formed to select three preferred names which will then go out to the community for feedback.
“Feedback will then be considered by council to make a final decision.
“A separate process will be conducted at a later date to seek naming rights sponsors for the main oval and stadium.”
Indoor sport could be played at the venue by the middle part of this year, while the oval was set to be ready for pre-season football training in 2022.
Outdoor netball courts also feature in the project.
South Mildura Sporting Club will be moving its football and netball teams to the precinct.
Media were given an inside look at the venue’s progress earlier this year.
The Federal Government and the council led the funding efforts for the $34 million first stage, while the Victorian Government upped its commitment by covering the $10 million second stage.
