A magistrate says a young Mildura man will kill himself if he doesn’t stop growing cannabis, smoking weed and getting behind the wheel of his parent’s car.

Dylan Mitchell-Casey, 24, pleaded guilty in the Mildura Magistrate’s Court to cultivating cannabis after police found his three-plant hydroponics set-up while searching for a missing person.

He also pleaded guilty to a range of drug driving and speeding offences.

The court heard Mithell-Casey smoked weed and got behind the wheel of his parent’s car.

Magistrate Russell Kelly chastised Mitchell-Casey’s parents who were present with him in the court.

“If the young man is smoking cannabis every day, he should not be allowed access to a vehicle,” he said, warning that Mitchell-Casey was likely to get himself or someone else killed if he didn’t change his ways.

When the court later heard that he had been diagnosed with ADHD and autism, Mr Kelly asked whether he was receiving any support for his mental health through the NDIS.

They told him that Mitchell-Casey was not.

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result,” Mr Kelly said.

Instead of sentencing Mitchell-Casey, Mr Kelly adjourned his decision for three months and told his parents to seek treatment for him through the NDIS.

“It should provide far better treatment than any corrections order ...” Mr Kelly said.

If that is arranged Mr Kelly said he would place Mitchell-Casey on a 12-month good behaviour bond.

He cancelled his licence and disqualified him from driving for 12 months.

“I’m trusting you not to drive a car, because if you do I’ll take it personally,” he said.

“If you do that, you’re looking at a jail term.”

Mitchell-Casey’s plea was adjourned until December 8.
