Mildura Magistrates’ Court: Liam Bennett busted trying to break into jail

Most people will do anything to avoid having to go to the police station. But one Mildura man tried his best to break-in after a big night out on the gear.

A drugged-up man was so desperate to be locked up he tried to break into a country police station by scaling the rear gates.

Liam Bennett, 26, faced Mildura Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he was sentenced to 21 days jail — judged as time served — for his bizarre offending.

The court heard that at 6.20am on March 29, 2023 Bennett went to Mildura police station on Deakin Ave and walked to the rear of the compound where he tried to break in.

After being thwarted by the security gate, Bennet went to the front of the station where he was detained by police after a brief struggle.

When questioned by police, Bennett said he had been on drugs the night before and told them he wanted to be “locked up” and had attempted to jump the fence, before adding, “I was doing anything I could to get locked up.”

Bennett’s lawyer said his client suffers from serious mental health issues. He was also found with cannabis and the drug GHB in his possession when he was arrested.

Magistrate Michael Coghlan urged Bennett to get help for his mental health issues and his drug use.
