A 26-year-old Mildura man has been granted bail after he allegedly strangled a person.
Glen Lawson faced Mildura Magistrates Court on Friday, with 15 charges against him including two counts of assault with a weapon — alleged to be a box cutter — false imprisonment, threats to kill and two counts of recklessly endangering life after allegedly strangling his victim.
Mr Lawson, a diagnosed schizophrenic, initially blamed his victim when he was first caught, but had come around and accepted responsibility, the court heard.
The prosecutor was opposed to Mr Lawson receiving bail due to the overall seriousness of the alleged crimes.
However Magistrate Patrick Southey bailed Mr Lawson saying he “said all the right things, in what sounds like a genuine fashion too, he sounds like he is clear headed, he has done well on parole before … so I’ll grant bail”.
The magistrate also cited the fact Mr Lawson might spend longer in remand than his sentence should he had not received bail.
“They are very, very serious charges Mr Lawson, you might yet go back to jail for them. But if you can stay out of trouble, forget about (the victim) … stop taking drugs, stay on your medication, all that stuff will hold you in good stead,” the magistrate said.
Mr Lawson will return to court on March 13.
