A Frenchman facing serious charges relating to child abuse material has begged in court for the matter to be dropped so he can be allowed to return home.
Mickael Combes told Mildura Magistrates’ Court that he voluntarily signed a deportation order while in an immigration detention centre and the deportation flight is due to depart on February 14.
“It’s been too long. I want to go home,” Mr Combes told Magistrate Patrick Southey via video link from immigration detention.
Police allegedly discovered child exploitation images on a USB found in Mr Combes possession following his arrest on a laundry list of road-related charges.
Prosecutor Ailsa McVean urged Mr Combes be kept on bail to prevent him from leaving the country so he can stand trial on the charges.
Mr Southey stood down the matter until Tuesday for the prosecution to decide if it is in the public interest for the matter to proceed to trial.
“I have become familiar with Mr Combes over the last six months and watched his life unravel in Australia,” Mr Southey said.
“I just wonder if the community isn’t best served by putting him on the first plane back to France.”
Mr Combes will front court on February 13.
