A Tyabb man has been charged and put on the Victorian sex offenders’ list after importing a child sex doll from China.
Steven Wood pleaded guilty to intentionally importing a childlike sex doll, classified as child abuse material, at Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
The package was intercepted by Australian Border Force (ABF) officers on November 1 last year before it reached him at his Tyabb address.
Officers inspected the package in Tullamarine and found out it was an lifelike silicone underage female sex doll, and in addition children’s clothing for it.
ABF officers searched his home where they found proof of purchase.
Phone recordings later revealed Mr Wood calling to find out why his package wasn’t delivered, saying it was a gift for his granddaughter.
But when he was interviewed he changed his story and told investigators he bought it “just for a laugh” as a 60th birthday present for a co-worker, before finally admitting he bought the doll for himself, but that he didn’t know what height it would be.
“I don’t go out very much. I don’t meet women,” he said.
“I just … you know … I can watch porn and cuddle up to a life size doll.”
When showed pictures of the doll in customs, he said he did not intend to buy one that size.
Mr Wood was entered into the Victorian sex offenders register and has been sentenced to a 15-month community corrections order and will receive treatment and rehabilitation under supervision.
In 2017 Australia emerged as one of the biggest buyers of sex dolls in the world.
Previously unidentified paedophiles were raided and arrested after an alarming 600 per cent rise in the seizure of mail order lifelike child sex dolls.
Some of the dolls represent children as young as five.
