A man has been jailed after police caught him breaking Melbourne’s strict stage four lockdown laws with pockets stuffed full of drugs, weapons and fake ID.
Brian Laidlaw fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday, pleading guilty to drugs and weapons charges and holding a fake driver’s licence for use.
The court heard Laidlaw was sitting in a parked car with three men near the corner of Little Bourke and Spencer streets, Melbourne about 8pm on September 20 when he was spotted by police.
Police searched him because he was in breach of Victoria’s COVID-19 travel restrictions and in his front pocket they found zip lock bags containing methyl amphetamine and ecstasy.
The court heard when asked why he had meth in his pocket he told police, “It’s for personal use”.
When they questioned him about the ecstasy they also found, he replied: “It’s cheaper than meth”.
He was arrested and a subsequent search of his bag revealed a bottle of GHB, a can of pepper spray, two drivers’ licences of another name, a credit card presumed to be stolen and a fake driver’s licence with his picture on it under a fake name.
He was sentenced to three months jail and fined $1000.
