Matthew Arnautovic – former boyfriend of Neighbours star Bonnie Anderson – will remain behind bars after having his bail application knocked back because he’s too dangerous, a court has heard.
The 33-year-old fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, smirking as police read out the summary of events describing a string of offences.
But his repeated attempts to tamper with evidence and his high risk of reoffending made him a danger to the public and his victims, Magistrate McKenna ruled.
The court heard one alleged victim had not provided a statement to police because she was fearful of what Mr Arnautovic would do to her, after he told her he would “put her right”.
“His objective is plain, his motivation is powerful. He’s doing it in a reasonably compelling, forceful fashion given that he’s in custody at the time,” Magistrate McKenna said.
“I’m certainly not satisfied the risk is acceptable in any measure that can be put in place, no matter how inventive one might be.
“Despite the current allegation, it reflects serious physically violent offending of a repeated nature.
“He doesn’t come close, in my view, to establishing the risk is acceptable.”
Ex-girlfriend Bonnie Anderson was in a Melbourne court just days after heading to the Logies in July last year after trying to cover up for her ex-boyfriend.
She lied to investigators and claimed Arnautovic had been with her at the time of a dangerous driving incident in Mount Evelyn in 2017.
Last year she told the Sunday Herald Sun she regretted lying to police.
“I made a mistake which I put down to my naivety and being overly trusting,” she said.
Mr Arnautovic will attend a committal hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court next month.
