A Mt Macedon man has been charged for a 24-year-old sexual assault in St Albans.
Samuel Beattie was arrested at his home early this morning by sexual crime squad detectives for the alleged 1996 attack.
Police allege that on July 23, 1996 Beattie broke into an Evergreen Ave home about 5.10am and sexually assaulted a 39-year-old woman who was alone at the time.
The woman has since died.
Beattie, 47, was charged with two counts of rape and aggravated burglary and appeared at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court yesterday.
Police media spokeswoman Natalie Webster said anyone with information about any historic crimes should always come forward.
“Victoria Police is committed to investigating matters of sexual assault and bringing those responsible to justice, no matter how much time has passed,” she said.
“We encourage anyone who has been a victim of a sexual assault to contact police.”
Mr Beattie will return to court early next year.
Anyone with information in relation to sexual offences is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
