Former Carlton player Ron De Iulio allegedly drove with meth in his system while he was banned from driving, court documents reveal.
Mr De Iulio, who played 104 games for the Blues, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates’ Court via phone on Wednesday afternoon to face alleged driving and drug offences.
Mr De Iulio was charged with driving while suspended and driving while relevant drugs, namely meth and THC, were in his system.
The 51-year-old was intercepted by Prahran highway patrol on the Monash Freeway at Glen Iris on December 5, 2021.
Court documents allege the Carlton man was suspended from driving at the time and had failed an oral fluid test in the three hours after driving.
His lawyer Zoe Davis appeared via videolink where she told Magistrate Guillaume Bailin she believed there was insufficient evidence provided by the prosecution regarding the filing of documents.
Ms Davis argued the location of the alleged offending should not be released to the media because she believed there would be inference made about it being a notorious location.
However, Mr Bailin referred to the charge sheet — which listed the location as Monash Freeway, Glen Iris — and said that was unnecessary.
Mr Bailin adjourned the matter for a contest mention on December 5.
