35 firefighters called to home engulfed by flames on Longfield St in Richmond

More than 30 firefighters were called to a Richmond property to battle a blaze that started in a bungalow.

More than 30 firefighters were called to a house that went up in flames in Melbourne’s east.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Longfield St in Richmond just after 8.30pm on Sunday, August 25.

A police spokesperson said the fire caused significant damage to the house.

“The house and neighbouring properties were safely evacuated,” the spokesperson said.

An FRV spokesperson said crews arrived within four minutes to find the single storey brick veneer house and bungalow on fire.

“FRV crews donned breathing apparatus and with hose lines entered the burning house to attack the fire,” the spokesperson said.

“Firefighters encountered a high fuel load and debris which hindered operations.”

The spokesperson added that through their quick work, crews were able to contain the fire to one home in a “duplex structure”.

“The house sustained significant damage in the fire. The bungalow has been destroyed,” they said.

“The fire started in the bungalow at the property before spreading through vegetation to the house.”

Several witnesses stood on the street watching as fireys worked to extinguish the blaze.

A neighbour, who asked to remain anonymous, said she smelt the smoke inside her house.

“I thought I might have burnt something in the kitchen — then I saw there was smoke in the air outside and was worried for people’s safety,” the woman said.

“And then next thing I know, I see heaps of flashing lights and a bunch of fire trucks in the street.

“I had to go and see what was going on — I hope no one is hurt, but well done to our emergency workers who responded in such a short amount of time.”

The incident was declared under control at 9.38pm, and the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has more information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000, submit a confidential report online or contact the Richmond police station on (03) 8420 3600.
