Questions answered for learner drivers in Melbourne lockdown

There was confusion aplenty during Melbourne’s lockdown 1.0 about whether learner drivers could practise behind the wheel and where you could go. Here are those questions answered for lockdown 2.0.

Learner drivers have been given the green light to hit the roads during Melbourne’s six-week lockdown period, but only with someone from their household.

Confusion reigned during the state lockdown when a learner driver was controversially fined while out for a lesson and was hit with a follow-up fine, despite assurances from police it would be withdrawn.

Eventually the fine was withdrawn by police, but that hasn’t stopped people asking the question whether learners can learn during this lockdown.

The answer is yes — but they may only drive with a parent or other licensed driver in their household.

While you can expect to see plenty of yellow and black squares on the front and back of cars in the next six weeks, none of them will be sitting tests.

As per Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) guidelines, learners will not be able to undertake tests until stage three stay-at-home restrictions are lifted.

Other common questions about travel during lockdown include:

■ Can I drive my car?

Yes, but only for one of the four reasons, such as driving to a local shop for food or essential items or driving to work.

■ Can I have passengers in my car?

Should be avoided unless they live in your household.

■ Can I get out of the house and just go for a drive?

Yes, but only within metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire. It shouldn’t involve leaving your vehicle for any purpose other than the four reasons.

■ Can I travel to stay overnight?

No. People in metropolitan Melbourne and Mitchell Shire are not allowed to travel unless it is for work or study, caregiving, seeking medical care or to visit your partner.

■ Can I travel to my holiday house?

No. If you live in metropolitan Melbourne or Mitchell Shire you must not leave home unless it is for one of the four reasons. The only reason to travel to a holiday house is to carry out essential maintenance.
