WRFL: Yarraville Seddon outclass Sunshine in Division 1 by 79 points

A former WAFL midfielder produced his best performance since crossing the Nullarbor as another West Australian recruit made his debut in Yarraville Seddon’s big win.

Nothing short of a big response was ever going to be accept for Yarraville Seddon against Sunshine.

After being thumped by Caroline Springs a week earlier, the Eagles stormed to a 16.16 (118) to 5.7 (37) win on Saturday.

It’s a result which handed Brad Julier’s side their second win of the season, moving them one game ahead of the Roos in a bid to maintain Western Region league Division 1 status.

“It was a real tough week, we had all types of things go wrong against Caroline Springs whether it was Covid or injuries,” Julier said.

“We knew how important this game was in the context of the season so it was pleasing to see the boys bounce back.”

Julier’s side had almost put the game to bed at the main break, holding a 53-point lead after a 10-goal to two opening half.

It could have been a much bigger margin if it wasn’t for some inaccurate goalkicking.

“We had to refocus at halftime,” he said.

“We didn’t finish the second quarter as well as I would have liked so we just needed to have that discussion about how important it was to finish out the game on a strong note.”

Mid-season recruit Corey Hitchcock played his best game for the Eagles after crossing from Western Australia.

He finished with two goals in a performance his coach described as a “class above”.

Brandon Lester, Sam Walker, Akol Deng, Riley Anderson and Ethan Williamson also impressed.

“He (Hitchcock) has been getting better with every game,” Julier said.

“He was tremendous around the contest and won plenty of footy throughout the afternoon.”

Yarraville Seddon also unveiled another in season acquisition with West Australian Brandan Young making his debut.

The 193cm prospect was on Subiaco’s list earlier in the year.

He played two games in their senior side in 2021.

“He’s just moved over from Western Australia,” Julier said.

“We’re pleased to have him on board with us for the rest of the season.”

Yarraville Seddon found several avenues to goal against Sunshine with Blake Green, Jesse Glass-McCasker and Jesse Varsamakis kicking three apiece.

Lachlan Green added two of his own.

“Jesse (Varsamakis) is our captain and I thought he stood up when we needed him to,” Julier said.

“It was also good to have Glass-McCasker available because he’s an extremely good VFL player who adds a lot of value to our side.”

The Eagles next face a possible season defining clash against Point Cook with both sides having won two games this season.

“It’s important we back up this week and show Saturday wasn’t a flash in the plan,” Julier said.

“We know we won’t be playing finals this year but we want to help shape the five. We’re getting a settled side now and think we can do some damage against these top sides.

“The next few weeks gives us an opportunity to build a platform for next season.”

Adeola Akintola was named the best player on the ground for Sunshine.

They’ll next face St Albans.
