They’ve been mates for a long time — and now they’re teammates.

Former AFL champions Brendan Fevola and Dane Swan played their first football game together on Saturday, with spectacular results.

Lining up for St Kilda City, they they helped the Saints knock off Southern league Division 1 ladder leaders Cranbourne by 32 points at Livingston Reserve in Cranbourne East.

Fevola kicked four goals straight, including two long bombs from the boundary, while Swan was instrumental off half back as St Kilda City pulled clear after half-time to win 13.9 (87) to 8.7 (55).

Former AFL forward Aaron Edwards also starred for the Saints, slotting five goals and combining well with Fevola.

Only a week ago, Fevola played for Port Melbourne Colts in the same competition.

But ahead of the June 30 clearance cut off, he joined St Kilda City.

Fevola and Swan have been training together in preparation for the AFL Legends Fight Night in August.

“It’s all through Swanny,’’ St Kilda City coach Matt Hoy said of Fevola’s change of clubs.

“I think they’ve got the same boxing coach and they’ve been spending a bit of time in the gym together.

“Swanny said, ‘we’re looking to play finals and we could use you’. And sure enough he was on board and away we went.’’

Hoy said St Kilda City’s leadership group discussed bringing in Fev during the week.

“Everyone was like, ‘well, what have we got to lose?,’’ Hoy said.

St Kilda City is 8-4 and in fourth spot.

Hoy said Fevola would continue playing with the Saints as they chased a finals berth.

“I think he’s going to play a couple more games and then around the boxing commitments he probably won’t be playing,’’ Hoy said.

“And then he might be right around the back end of the season.’’

It was an emotional day for Hoy, who has stepped down as coach for personal reasons.

“That was my last game as coach,’’ he said.

He was embraced by his players after the game and was presented with club life membership in the rooms.

“It was really touching,’’ he said.

“Mate, I honestly didn’t expect that.’’

Hoy singled out St Kilda City midfielder Tyrell Lafituanai and ruckman Troy Kelm for “turning the game around’’ after Cranbourne led narrowly at half-time.

“They’re the two that got the game going for us, started winning the on-ball game,’’ Hoy said.

“And then Pottsy (Luke Potts) and the usual suspects came along for the ride.

“We started winning the fifty fiftys inside and started getting our running game going.’’

Lafituanai is in his second year of senior footy and is tough and hard, with a rugby background.

Saints full-back Dan DeGois also played a key role keeping Cranblourne champion Marc Holt goalless.

Cranbourne’s loss was further soured by a serious injury to midfielder Dylan Cavalot, who broke his ankle.

Eagles coach Steve O’Brien said his side was outplayed by St Kilda City.

“They shut our ball movement down and to be honest they were harder than us at the contest which proved crucial,’’ he said.

“As I said to the players, ‘you either win or you’re learning in this game’.

“We will take out of that a learning.

“We’ve got a few players out so hopefully we can get them up and running.

“We will have a look at the vision and see what they did against us and learn from that and make sure we’re better prepared next time.’’

Hoy said St Kilda City was likely to regain former Melbourne midfielder Jimmy Magner from injury next week.
