WFNL: Rams chasing back-to-back wins

Western Rams coach Connor Grech feels like the “gap is closing” on the better teams in the Western league as his side looks to complete a feat it hasn’t seen since 2014. Go inside the club’s improvement.

The Western Rams can sense the improvement.

Under new coach Connor Grech, the club has the opportunity to achieve an 11-year first as soon as this weekend.

If the Rams secure a win over Tarneit, it would be their third win of the season. 2014 was the last time the Rams won more than two games.

That season it was nine as they finished sixth on the Riddell District league ladder.

On Saturday, Grech’s side secured a 14-point win over Laverton as they look to continue building during the second half of the year.

“We feel like we’re building towards where we want to be,” Grech said.

“The thing we’re looking for most is more consistent performances across four quarters which is something we were able to do against Laverton.

“We were challenged in the last quarter, they just kept coming at us, and hopefully it’s something to help take our game to another level in the back half of the season.”

While there have been some heavy losses this season, the Rams have produced encouraging performances against all sides especially “in patches” according to Grech.

“It feels like the gap is closing on the top sides,” Grech said.

“We’ve often been in games right up until three-quarter-time, then we haven’t had the polish to go on with the job. We’ve run out of legs a few times as well.

“It’s something we want to work on for the rest of the season.”

Despite going in as strong favourites against Tarneit, looking for back-to-back wins, Grech knows his side must enter the game with caution.

“We’ve already started the messaging around the need for another four-quarter performance,” he said.

A BIG RECRUIT MAKES HIS DEBUT

While Sunshine Heights might have suffered a big loss at the hands of North Footscray, there was one major positive as boom recruit Harley Armstrong-Weston finally made his debut. The Hoppers Crossing premiership ruckman crossed to the Dragons in the off-season and kicked one goal. Given he played junior footy at the club, he is a one-pointer.

VFL YOUNG GUN THRIVES

Footscray VFL listed player Xavier Kardachi played a key role as Sunshine secured its second win of the Western league division one season. He was best afield as they ran out 23-point winners against Altona as Riley Buckland kicked three goals.

CAREER DAY FOR DISTRICTS STAR

Werribee Districts gun Harrison White enjoyed his best day in front of goal with five majors as his side secured a 52-point win over Albion. White has been a consistent goalkicker at local level since graduating from the under-18s and also spending time on Werribee’s VFL list.
