WRFL: Hoppers Crossing names its 50-year anniversary team

Hoppers Crossing has been home to plenty of talented senior footballers over the last 50 years and they’ve tried to fit them all in one side. SEE WHO MADE IT.

In its 50 years of existence, the Hoppers Crossing Football Club has had some special talents play in its senior side.

On Saturday night, the Warriors tried to fit all of those players into one senior side at the club’s 50-year anniversary gala ball as they unveiled a “team of the half century”.

The side included three former league best and fairest including Glenn McCaw (2003), Michael Frost (1996 and 1997) and Wayde Skipper (2015).

Paul Gudde, who was named at centre-half back, and David Clonan, the team’s back pocket and a 2002 premiership player, were selected as captain and vice-captain respectively.

Gordon Casey, a former Carlton and Footscray player, was named as the side’s coach.

Jackson Viola was the only current senior player to be named in the 50-year side earning a place on the bench.

At one stage, the club had short-listed 80 players for the team.

A team of the decades for the 2010s was also named.

The Warriors have won three premierships (1992, 2002 and 2004) since their inception and finished as runners-up on seven occasions.
