WRFL: Yarraville Seddon makes it three in a row against Hoppers Crossing

Yarraville Seddon has won three games in a row and re-signed its coach Brad Julier in what has proven to be a huge July. Here’s why it’s only the start of something special.

It’s been a big July at Yarraville Seddon.

The Eagles have won three WRFL Division 1 games on the trot and locked senior coach Brad Julier away for the next two seasons.

They’ve got four wins to their name for the season, to sit three games clear of Sunshine at the bottom of the ladder, and look well on their way to avoiding the drop barring a stunning run of results.

Julier’s side produced their best win of the season after stunning Hoppers Crossing 13.11 (89) to 10.14 (74) at home on Saturday afternoon.

The former WRFL interleague coach hinted that it was all coming together for his side with plenty more to look forward to.

“The whole club is excited at the moment, it’s a real positive environment,” he said.

“It was definitely our biggest win of the year. It’s rewarding to see it all coming together and we’ve got a huge belief that this group of where they could go.

“To get one of the top sides is something we had been aiming for.

“We’ve proven we belong now and hopefully we can make some more inroads in the last four weeks and build towards next season.

“The club has a great crop of under 18s who will come into senior footy next year and we’re excited about what they’re going to add.”

Sam Walker continued his impressive first season in Eagles with a best on ground display while Blake Green was dangerous inside forward 50 with three goals.

“Sam has been great for us, he’s really stood up in the big games against quality opposition,” Julier said.

Mid-season recruit Akol Deng again found himself among the home side’s better players after he crossed from WRFL rival St Albans after the opening six games.

Brandon Lester, Oscar Gordon and Lewis Parsons also impressed for Julier’s side.

“Akol’s development has been rapid in the last six weeks,” he said.

“He’s been playing some brilliant footy. When we brought him in, we didn’t just want to go out and add anybody.

“We’re targeting players who we believe can add something to our group as a player and person.”

Yarraville’s victory was built on the back of a strong first quarter display where it kicked three goals into a significant breeze as Hoppers kicked 4.6.

With the wind at their back, they then kicked six goals to none to lead by 27 points at the main break.

“We defended really well in that first quarter and it set us up for the day,” Julier said.

“We knew Hoppers were going to come in the third and I thought we did well. Kicking a goal late in the quarter put us back in front and we were able to go on with it from there.”

Dave Barbieri was named best afield for the Warriors while Ezzat Haddard and Braden Ferrari also impressed.
