WRFL: Tyler Kolyniuk kicks matchwinner for Point Cook against St Albans

A Point Cook young gun enjoyed the biggest moment of his career with a crucial goal which may have secured the club’s WRFL Division 1 status.

Tyler Kolyniuk may never have kicked a more important goal in his life.

The young gun delivered Point Cook’s only major of the final term against St Albans and it saw his side hold on for a thrilling 6.15 (51) to 7.6 (48) WRFL Division 1 win.

Kolyniuk’s effort was the only goal scored into the breeze at Kings Park Reserve.

It was a goal which saw Kolyniuk and his teammates move two games clear of Sunshine at the bottom of the ladder and given recent form puts them in a strong position to avoid relegation.

Point Cook coach Brett Jacobs said the maturity of his side had continued to grow throughout the season and sometimes just hadn’t been shown on the scoreboard.

“Tyler missed one a few minutes earlier so it was good he didn’t make the same mistake twice,” Jacobs joked.

“It wasn’t easy with the wind either. St Albans were coming but we were able to hold our nerve.

“We’ve been in similar positions this year and we had gone onto lose those games. It was good to see the growth of our group.

“I think we’ve been competitive in most games this year when we’ve had a stronger side on the park.

“This was a big win for everyone at our club from the volunteers to the players.”

In just his fifth senior game, Tyrell Lui was named the best player on the ground as he continued an impressive run of form.

Lochie Allan, Alex Grigg, Nick Buykx, Luke Denny (three goals) and Jim Botsaris were also impressive for the Dogs.

“It was one of the better teams we’ve been able to put out on the park this year,” Jacobs said.

Meanwhile for St Albans, Bol Kolang was named among his side’s best after finishing the afternoon with four goals.

Jadyn Trowsdale, Mason Dipetta, Joshua Klaromenos and Oskar Brown also battled hard.

Point Cook will next face a huge test against Altona as St Albans aims to bounce back against Hoppers Crossing with a week off before the next round.
