Local footy champion Steve Muller will line up on his toughest opponent yet – but he won’t do it alone.
After the recently-retired St Paul’s McKinnon full forward was last week diagnosed with colon cancer, a GoFundMe page on behalf of Muller has been set up as he embarks on his battle.
Muller recently hung up the boots after two senior flags at Doncaster and one at St Paul’s, where he topped the club goal kicking seven times and the league twice.
He walked off the field with his arm around long-time friend Jason Heffernan, who was also departing the club.
Heffernan was full of praise for Muller’s character.
“Steve is one of the best people you will ever meet,” he says.
“But the reason he has been so successful and done so well in footy is because the dude never cut any corners. He was one of the best players you would ever want to coach.
“Full forwards nine times out of 10 are enigmas, they dance to the beat of their own drum and back in the day, the full forwards were highly paid, never trained, always on the massage table.
“This guy never took a night off, never took a week off, never cut a corner, he trained as hard as a 20-year-old.
“Absolute pleasure to coach that even this year, his last year with a young child, the guy didn’t cut a corner, he put in and is very respected by the group.
“He is just one of those guys that people just gravitated to.”
