The future of long-serving Southern league club Ashwood is up in the air as it ponders a move east.

Ashwood, which plays in the Southern league’s third division, is assessing the benefits of a move to the Eastern Football Netball League.

The club’s geographical position and a hope of boosting its junior program is currently driving the idea.

Ashwood has been a member of the Southern league since its establishment in 1985 and has won two premierships, lifting the cup in 1996 and 2001.

The Magpies were one of six clubs in the Monash region but have since become one of two, standing alongside Clayton as the only two which remain.

It’s understood the club met with the Southern Football Netball League on Tuesday but is yet to meet with the Eastern Football Netball League.

Ashwood is included in an exciting expansion of the Southern league as the competition welcomes Narre Warren and Berwick Springs in 2025.

If it is to move to the Eastern league, the only suitable destination would be Division 4 (the competition’s fifth grade) as it has an uneven number of teams.

Ashwood declined to comment.

The Southern Football Netball League was contacted for comment.
