Mark it down as one of the games of the Northern Football League season.

Not just in Division 2, but the competition.

Banyule’s four-point win over Thomastown at Beverley Rd Oval would not have looked out of place in the top tier.

The 17.7 (109) to 16.9 (105) scoreline would show that.

Banyule only hit the front for the first time at the 23-minute mark of the last quarter when Jack Langford nailed a long-range shot.

Thomastown grabbed the lead back three minutes later before Devin McDonald slotted the matchwinner with the final kick.

The siren sounded as the ball crossed the goal line, sparking jubilant celebrations.

Banyule had trailed by 33 points early in the last quarter before Scott Gumbleton and Mitch Lovell combined for four majors in six minutes to drag the home side back in to the contest.

Banyule coach Paul Harris said his side was “absolutely” lucky to score the win.

“If you were at the game, no doubt you would say Thomastown was the better side all game,” Harris said.

“We just hung in there all game, if there was one side who looked like it was going to blow the game open it was them.

“We had all the momentum in the last 15 minutes of the game but that was probably the only time in the afternoon we did have the momentum.

“At some stage we thought we would get an opportunity and to our credit, we hung in there and then when we got our opportunity, which was late, we took it.”

Star forward James Kroussoratis will return from a broken finger after the Queen’s Birthday, and Jake Truefeldt has played two games in the reserves.

“We’re fortunate in that if you have a look at our best players in our reserves at the moment, it’s all guys that could come in,” Harris said.

“We’ve got a number of guys now putting pressure … someone like Sean Downes went back to the reserves last week and kicked four goals, got best-on and played another strong game on the weekend.

“There’s another few guys in the reserves knocking on the door. We’ve been fortunate at this point in time our availability has been really good, at this stage we’ve only played 25 guys in the seniors because we’ve been healthy.”
