Macleod is taking the first steps to turning its season around after a winless opening month to its Northern Football League campaign.

The Roos made it consecutive wins on Saturday after a gritty 23-point victory over Lower Plenty in a scrappy contest at De Winton Park.

Small forward Jordan Corelli was the star for Macleod.

The fifth-gamer kicked four goals in a best afield performance as the Roos recorded a hard-fought 11.8 (74) to 7.9 (51) win.

Corelli is a Roos junior and is in his first season of senior football.

“He had a really good influence playing forward … he’s been a really consistent performer, competes really strongly and just does the right things all the time,” Macleod coach Christian Stagliano said.

“He’s been fantastic for us to be honest nearly every game and it was good for him to get some reward for his efforts.”

Macleod has featured in the past four grand finals but slumped to 0-4 after losses to North Heidelberg, Montmorency, Heidelberg and Greensborough.

But it is now just one game outside the top five with a 2-4 record.

“We haven’t had great continuity but I guess (we’ve) had more time together and more games to practice,” Stagliano said.

“It’s given guys like Jordan an opportunity and he’s been super so as much as anything, I think improvement will come with more time together.

“Our practice games were a bit inconsistent in terms of personnel and what we had. The side that has played together the past three weeks and predominantly been a similar side, even though we’ve had three or four changes.”

Reid Brandt and Brad Leggett are due to return from injury.

The Roos faces Hurstbridge and North Heidelberg before the mid-season bye.

“We just want to be consistent, we’re 2-4 and can’t look too far ahead,” he said.

“We’ve just got to win every game that’s in front of us.

“We want to win every game we’re playing. This week (we) play Hurstbridge, win that Hurstbridge game and then obviously another really big game against North Heidelberg.

“We’re heading in the right direction and comfortable … things are heading where we need them to be.”
