The race for the Bonbeach coaching job is hotting up, with a leading candidate confirming his interest while a former AFL player has ruled himself out.
Applications for the Sharks’ top job opened last Friday.
Former Hastings coach Ricky Ferraro said he would apply in the hope of coaching the club he played with between 2012-14, including the 2013 grand final.
He said he’d been approached by a couple of Bonbeach players and officials urging him to put his hand up.
“They want me to apply for it and then go through the interview process,’’ Ferraro said.
Ferraro, 30, said he’d received a couple of coaching offers from Southern FNL and AFL Outer East clubs since he resigned at Hastings earlier this month.
“I declined on the phone,’’ he said.
Former Carlton player and Edi-Asp coach John Hynes ruled himself out of the Bonbeach coaching job on Monday morning, saying he didn’t have the time nor the desire.
Hynes’ two sons play at Bonbeach and he has coached a side in the junior club for the past three years.
But a return to senior coaching ranks wasn’t on his radar.
“I’m not interested at all, mate,’’ he said.
“I just haven’t got the desire or the want to commit the time to it.
“It’s probably been that way for a few years to be honest.’’
Hynes coached the MPNFL interleague side in 2017 and said he hasn’t felt the urge to return to senior ranks since.
“When I did the interleague a few years ago that was good for me because it gave me a taste of it without the season-long commitment,’’ he said.
“And that was ideal but even that consumed a lot of my time and I just don’t really have the desire to do it at this point.
“My two boys are playing…when I stopped playing it was more about putting time into them and helping them along, making sure I didn’t miss any of their stuff and since then I haven’t really missed it to be honest.
“You’ve got to really want to do it and you’ve got to commit with your time and I don’t have either.’’
Hynes’ name was mentioned as a possible candidate for the Bonny senior job, along with fellow former AFL players Justin Peckett and Paul Hopgood.
“There was an inquiry made but it was knocked on the head pretty quick,’’ Hynes said.
Bonbeach played off in the MPNFL Division 1 preliminary final last season and Hynes said the Sharks job was a good one.
“It will be a good job. If I was looking to get back into it, it would be a really good job,’’ he said.
“They’ve got some really good kids. They’ve got a good mix with (Mitch) Gent coming back, they’ve still got Beau Bailey and Lachie Gill-Renouf floating around in VFL footy. Macca’s still a star, Trent Dennis-Lane has been really good for them.
“In the group I coached think there are a handful of them that are up to playing senior footy, definitely in the next few years anyway.’’
