MPNFL clubs have been asked if they’re keen to play in 2020, and the response so far has been clear cut.

In or out?

MPNFL clubs have been asked to indicate if they wish to play in 2020.

They were to submit their formal positions to AFL South East by close of business today, but the deadline has been extended by a day or two.

“We have had some clubs request a little bit of further time,’’ AFL South East chief operating officer Shaun Connell said.

“The majority that have come back so far have all indicated that they’re in.’’

Connell said the league was still working towards a July 25 start, pending government protocols.

It’s understood Chelsea is the only club that has withdrawn from the season so far.

Connell said AFL South East was working with all 22 MPNFL clubs to establish who’s committed to the season.

A decision if the MPNFL will push ahead should be known later in the week.

“We will continue to confirm the clubs’ buy-in,’’ Connell said.

“Once we know what that looks like we will go back to the clubs and update them.’’

The MPNFL last week unveiled its plan to return to the field, with a July 25 start, but it’s contingent on crowds of 500 being able to attend games.

Some clubs have raised concerns about their long-term viability if they played this year.

Earlier today, Western Region Football League became the third metropolitan competition to cancel its senior season amid the coronavirus crisis.

Connell said junior football in the region was still scheduled to start on July 12.

“There’s been no change,’’ he said.

“Contact training was able to commence last night. The state government announcement over the weekend doesn’t impact junior footy and we will continue to work the clubs to resume on July 12.’’
