A goal in the final second from Lilydale’s Lachlan Wilson has given the Falcons an unbeaten start to the Eastern Football League season.

Wilson’s snap from the Lilydale Sports Oval pocket proved to be the last kick of the game as the siren sounded when the ball sailed through the goalposts.

Tom Jacotine marked the ball for Park Orchards in the Sharks forward 50 but was caught holding the ball after playing on.

Lilydale scores win with last kick of the game

Lilydale had led by 34 points in the last quarter before Park Orchards kicked five unanswered goals to hit the lead.

But Wilson proved to be the hero for the Falcons, giving last year’s grand finalists a 2-0 start to the Division 1 season.

Lilydale coach Ben Neagle said his side controlled large parts of the game but ultimately pinched victory.

“Park Orchards played some exceptional footy in that last little period and got its noses in front,” Neagle said.

“Unbelievable. Honestly couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Literally about a second after he kicked it the siren went.”

The win followed a seven-point Round 1 victory over Doncaster East in last year’s grand final rematch.

In a division tipped to be one of the competition’s most even, close results could determine the make up of the top five.

“Early wins on the board are huge,” Neagle said.

“We’re rapt to bank two early wins but knowing we have a hell of a lot of work to do.

“If you can win the close ones, it goes a long way to shoring up where you want to be at the end of the year.

“You can look back on games like that and if you lose them they can really come back to haunt you but we get away with it.”
