It’s yet to win a game but Montrose’s first two performances of the Premier Division season have suggested it may not be the easybeats predicted at the start of the year.

It’s yet to win a game but Montrose’s first two performances of the Premier Division season have suggested it may not be the easybeats predicted at the start of the year.

The Demons pushed Noble Park for three quarters on Saturday but fell to a 49-point defeat.

Montrose trailed Noble Park by just 10 points at three-quarter time before the Bulls kicked eight goals in the final term to finish with a 16.11 (107) to 8.10 (58) victory.

Montrose coach Peter Bastinac said there were signs of competitiveness from his side’s first two games.

Many have tipped the Demons would be fighting for their place in Premier division after the club advertised for players last month.

“We’ll get better, I’m confident of that,” Bastinac said.

“We’ve shown we can be competitive, we’ve just got to be competitive for longer.

“I was confident at three-quarter time we could have had our first win but we just got beaten in that last quarter by a better team.”

Montrose had second-gamers Bailey White and Beau Tennant in its best players, while Tyler Birchall also made his debut.

Bastinac said the class across the competition had proved the difference in his side’s opening two games.

“The depth of talent certainly has a big say in it,” Bastinac said.

“It’s just about not allowing the opposition to score when you’re having that quiet time or they’ve got control of the footy.

“We’re just letting teams bang on quick goals and then the scoreboard gets away from you a little bit.

“We’re working on it, we’re getting better and the boys are giving it their all, which is pleasing, but we’ve still got to identify those areas that we can improve on and be better the next time we play.”
