For the past decade Borg has held various coaching positions in the northern suburbs, most notably as senior coach at St Mary's for four years.
Borg said he wanted to resume his senior coaching career next year after serving as an assistant at Hurstbridge this season.
“I enjoyed my time at Hurstbridge as an assistant but, to be honest, coaching is what I love doing and if the right opportunity presented I was looking to get back into it,” Borg said.
“Culture-wise and everything was really important for me when looking for a club so I wasn’t just going to jump into anything.
“At the same time, I had some good options as assistant coach, which I was happy to take as well elsewhere, but thankfully the Glen Waverley role popped up and they thought I was a good fit.”
Borg said he was excited by the Hawks’ young list, which suffered a 16-point defeat to Whitehorse Pioneers in this year’s Division 4 grand final.
“I thought it was a really good opportunity to take on a club that has great values on and off the field,” he said.
“They have a very similar background to St Mary’s from where I have come from — a young club that competed in a grand final this year.”
However, Glen Waverley will be without spearhead Matthew Ferguson in 2019.
The former St Kilda player has linked up with Warburton Millgrove in the AFL Outer East competition after booting 56 goals in his only season at Central Reserve.
On-baller Andrew Humphries will also be a notable departure next year when he travels to England to play cricket.
But Kilsyth best and fairest runner-up Will Mutschler will also add to the Hawks’ midfield stocks.
“He’s signed on as that inside mid that will help us fill a couple of these holes,” Borg said.
Young forward Adam Marchetti has also signed at Glen Waverley from Beaconsfield, where he played two senior games in 2018.
“He’s only a young guy but is a pretty impressive goalkicker through under-19s football at Red Hill as well,” Borg said.
“He’ll play an important role for us up forward.”
