KYLE Emley saw it as a natural progression.

A teacher by trade, Emley viewed a move into the coaching ranks as the next move in his career.

The 29-year-old has been appointed Heathmont’s new coach, accepting the role after Joel Cordwell stepped down at the end of this year’s finals series.

Emley was a Jets junior before establishing himself at Eastern Football League powerhouse Vermont, where he was vice-captain from 2015 to 2016 before spending the past two seasons at VAFA club Collegians as an assistant coach.

“Body permitting” he will again pull on the boots in 2019.

Emley said his links to Heathmont made it an attractive position.

“Being a teacher, the next step for me was to throw my hat in the ring in the senior coaching sphere,” Emley said.

“One of the other motivations was my first junior club was Heathmont.

“It will be good to go back and give something back to where I first started and a place that really laid the foundations for me.”

The Jets have also signed emerging utility Ayhan Bajramov, who played six senior games at Premier division club Montrose this year.

“He’s a talented kid. He just wants to get back to enjoying his footy and playing with no stress,” Emley said.

“He works with a couple of the guys from the footy club as well so we’re excited to see what he brings to the table.”

Heathmont advanced to the grand final from fifth in 2017 and was knocked out by eventual Division 3 premier Boronia in the semi-final this year.

Emley said his priority would be to develop the Jets’ young talent.

“I think they’ve got some really good attacking young players but they have a tendency to leak goals in succession and lose momentum,” he said.

“We’ll be looking at our team defence side of things but also how we can effectively use the ball a little bit better to be able to maintain possession of the ball.

“They’ve been up the top so I don’t think much needs to change … it will just be tinkering with a few game style things.”
