BULLDOGS PREVAIL IN THRILLING QUALIFYING FINAL
The Hawks led by 25 points at halftime against East Burwood in Saturday’s preliminary final and extended their margin beyond seven goals in the third quarter, but had to survive a comeback from the Rams.
East Burwood shaved the deficit to within two goals, only for Glen Waverley to steady and secure a 12.11 (83) to 9.10 (64) victory.
The Hawks dropped the first two games of the season but entered the finals on a 16-game winning streak, only to suffer a slip up against Whitehorse in the second semi-final.
Glen Waverley coach Ryan Flack said his side deserved its place in the decider.
“Across the course of the home and away (season) we probably proved that we belong but finals footy can be funny,” Flack said.
“Even over the last two weeks, I think we’ve proven to ourselves at the very least that we deserve to be there and now we get a chance at it.”

Luke Broad kicked two goals and was instrumental in the victory, while Ben Sullivan, Jesse Dunne, Andrew Humphries and Josh McMillan were also strong contributors.
Assistant-coach Tom Eddy is also set to return for the grand final after missing through a corky.
The season finale will be the third time the Hawks have made it through to a decider since being formed in 2005.
“Probably the biggest thing I get out of it, firstly seeing the guys that have been there right through the journey we’ve had over the last few years from not winning a game, getting relegated from Division 3 but sticking fat,” Flack said.
“A lot of the people behind the scenes that are still doing the work are the same people that have been there since the club’s inception, so they’ve ridden that rollercoaster as well.
“There is a lot of excitement from them, some of the past players and everybody associated with the club really.”
The grand final will be held at Walker Park, Mitcham from 2.30pm on Saturday.
